India is currently the world’s largest milk producer and contributes over 23 per cent of global milk production. Milk production in India has grown at a CAGR of 6.2 per cent - growing from 146.31 million tonnes in 2015, to 209.96 million tonnes in 2021. Dairy production has reached a value of approximately 4.2% of India’s GDP and accounted for 20% of India’s gross agricultural output. With the relentless growth in the availability of milk and milk products in the years prior, India has been the largest consumer of dairy products since 1998.
The dairy industry makes up a major part of the rural economy in India and serves as an important source of work and income. Almost all the dairy items produced in India are consumed domestically with liquid milk making up most of the market.
In addition to being a sound business opportunity, India’s dairy industry is a critical avenue for socio-economic development. The Government of India has consistently and regularly introduced programs and initiatives that target the continuous development of the dairy sector.
Nichrome’s History in the Indian Dairy Industry
With an association going back more than 4 decades, Nichrome now offers the fastest milk packaging machine in addition to many other automatic dairy packaging solutions for liquid, powder and viscous products in the dairy industry.
In fact, Nichrome made its entry into automated packaging machines to promote the cause of the White Revolution in India. Nichrome developed the country’s very first milk pouch packaging machine in response to the Government’s demand for indigenous and economical dairy packaging solutions.
Its first Filpack machine was installed at Kurla Dairy, Mumbai - starting the commercial distribution of milk pouches on 7th March 1977.
Nichrome is India’s path
breaking integrated packaging solutions provider with many advanced automated dairy packaging solutions for all kinds of products in the dairy industry.
Nichrome has recently developed an integrated
mini dairy plant that allows
small dairy farmers to process and package their products for commercial
retailing. These farmers tend to sell their dairy products to local
cooperatives where they don’t always get the right price.
Nichrome’s entry-level milk processing plant has
been developed for the benefit of small dairy farmers. It is a low capital
investment, small milk processing plant without a
boiler that heats the milk electrically. This mini dairy plant
is energy-efficient, requires low maintenance and is relatively easier to
operate.
Functioning of the Mini
Dairy Plant
- Raw milk is stored in silos
- Impurities in the milk are removed
- The milk then moves to the pasteuriser
- The milk is heated to 72.5 degrees Celsius in the pasteuriser with electricity
- The milk passes through the homogeniser once heated to 65 degrees Celsius
- During homogenisation, the fat globules are broken down into extremely small particles and distributed uniformly through the milk to prevent the separation of cream in the milk
- The milk is then returned to the pasteuriser where pathogens and microorganisms are destroyed at a temperature of 72.5 degrees Celsius
- Then the milk is cooled to 8 degrees Celsius in the PHE Chiller
- The milk is then moved to a storage tank
- Once stored, the milk is packaged in pouches of 200ml, 500ml or 1000ml capacities using a Nichrome milk packaging machine
