The First Name in Secondary Packaging

Secondary packaging is an additional layer of packaging of products applied after the primary packaging to group a certain number of products into a cohesive SKU (Stock Keeping Unit). Secondary packaging is used by many businesses to contain, aggregate, pinpoint and protect the products within the primary packaging.

Secondary packaging may be in the form of either commercial packaging or consumer packaging. Secondary commercial packaging is rarely seen by the end-user and it is not designed to appeal to them. The materials for secondary commercial packaging tend to lack colours and graphics. Secondary consumer packaging is designed to appeal to consumers while still providing an additional protective layer for the product. This kind of packaging is designed to be attractive with colours and graphics that entice customers to make the purchase.

When secondary packaging is done with apt branding and packaging design, it can act as the catalyst that clinches the sale of your product to the consumer over those of competitors sitting on market shelves beside yours.

Secondary packaging can add to the luxurious experience of using a product. It imbues sophistication to the packaging and adds the differentiating factor between a premium product and a mainstream one. For eg, a premium food product may have multiple layers of packaging that extend the experience of consuming it.

Secondary packaging may even be required to protect and secure the packaged product during shipping in addition to shielding the primary packaging from scuffs and scratches.

Another goal of secondary packaging is to provide tamper-proof packaging, to ensure that the primary product is not tampered with during transit. Secondary packaging helps the consumer ascertain if the primary product was damaged, contaminated or tampered with on its way to them.

Elements of Secondary Packaging

The secondary product packaging can be composed of many elements:

-       The box

-       Interior padding

-       Product assortment separators

-       Physical reinforcement to prevent transit damage

The various elements of secondary packaging can have another level of branding to increase the product’s appeal and visibility on retail shelves.

Benefits of Secondary Packaging

1.    Ease of Transportation - When transporting large numbers of SKUs, it is important to have something to hold them together for practicality and convenience. The secondary packaging may be in the form of a bigger box/carton or a shrink-wrapped bundle of products that makes them easy to transport.

2.    Increased Convenience - Secondary packaging makes it easy for consumers who want to buy a bundle, assortment or batch of a certain product to handle and carry it conveniently.

3.    Improved Merchandizing - The secondary packaging of smaller items can be used to increase the aesthetic appeal of these products on market shelves.

4.    Value Proposition - Bundling an assortment of products into a single SKU can add to the value perceived by the consumer, leading to increased sales.

5.    Benefits for Ecommerce - The right secondary packaging can help Ecommerce companies prevent damage during shipping, improve brand recognition and enhance the customer experience.

MAP Tray Sealing From Nichrome

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is the trend in food packaging nowadays. The MAP technology is gaining more and more popularity as a method of preserving freshness and lengthening the shelf life of fresh foods - fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products and more.

So what is MAP technology?

Modified Atmosphere Packaging is the method of modifying the makeup of the internal atmosphere of a package - usually food packages and medicines - in order to improve the shelf life of the packed products. This technology was developed to deal with the short shelf life of certain food products such as meat, fish, poultry and dairy in the presence of oxygen. The presence of oxygen in the packaging leads to the lipid oxidation of the food product. Oxygen contributes to the shortened shelf life of the fresh produce because it leads to high respiration rates. Even microbiologically, Oxygen catalyses the growth of aerobic spoilage microorganisms. It is plainly obvious that a reduction in oxygen and its replacement with more suitable gases can deter or reduce oxidation reactions and microbiological spoilage.

The MAP process generally involves the lowering of the amount of oxygen in the headspace within the package. Nitrogen - a comparatively inert gas - or carbon dioxide can be used to replace oxygen. The use of active techniques such as gas flushing and compensated vacuum, or passive ones like designing ‘breathable films’ can be used to achieve a stable atmosphere of gases inside the packaging.

Packaging the product in a modified atmosphere needs specialised machinery that can flush out air from the packaging chamber and replace it with another gas or a specifically defined mixture of gases. The product is then sealed in the packaging to ensure that only the modified atmosphere is around the product and unwanted gases are eliminated from the pack.

Cutting edge technologies were needed to be developed to ensure that the mixture of gases is correct, to test the sealed packages for the right mixture, and to ensure that the packaging does not leak.

The Athena Thermoforming Tray Seal Machine from Nichrome

The Italian company Tecnovac is an industry leader in the manufacturing of packaging machines for food products. It has carved out a name for itself in the packaging industry over time with the production of all-round automatic packaging machines for a diverse range of products including food, industrial and pharmaceutical products.

Nichrome - India’s leading packaging machine manufacturer and food packaging solutions provider - has teamed up with Tecnovac to bring its Athena Automatic Tray Sealer to India. The Athena has the capability of packaging food in a modified atmosphere, in any combination of trays and top films for packaging chopped vegetables & fruits, raw & processed meat, fish, frozen food, Indian mithai, namkeen, and ready-to-eat meals such as biryani etc.

The Athena machine is able to seal and pack in a protective atmosphere (vacuum+gas) or with a ‘skin effect’, all types of trays or jars using pre-formed trays. Its strong stainless steel structure and ease of maintenance make the Athena ideal for use in small and medium-sized companies. The combination of these features with an output speed of up to 60 trays per minute makes the Athena easily acceptable to India’s ready-to-eat food manufacturers.

 MAP in the Post-Pandemic World

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalysed a number of developments in safety and hygiene in almost every arena. In such a situation, MAP Tray Sealing and the Athena food tray sealing machines offer a win-win situation for both manufacturers and consumers of food items. In India especially, snacks, namkeen and mithai are a beloved part of life. Athena’s MAP technology helps ensure that the food items are packed safely - untouched by human hands - and raises hygiene levels that are a particular concern of all consumers. With MAP tray sealing and automatic vacuum packing machines, manufacturers can ensure the safe and clean production and sale of mithai and snacks that consumers crave.

Signs Your Packaging Operation is Ready for Automation

Signs Your Packaging Operation is Ready for Automation
Packaging Operation is Ready for Automation
Is your food packaging line largely dependent on manual labour? Are you finding it difficult to keep pace with increasing production? Having issues with labour and cost of packaging? Planning to expand your product range but doubt your current setup can handle it?

Automated Packaging Systems can make a difference. Let's run through some of the most telling signs that your business will benefit from automating your packaging line.

1. Labour

Are labour costs eating into your profits? Do you have difficulty recruiting good resources? Is it a hassle to train and manage temporary staff when your regulars are sick or workload increases? Do long shifts make your labour tired and inattentive? Dealing with human resources on the shop floor is no easy task, and most of the time, in the long run, machines cost much less than labour.

2. Accuracy

After all, we're human. Mistakes are bound to happen. Manual packaging is a monotonous, tiring job and humans are likely to occasionally spill contents, make mistakes in filling, sealing and counting, etc. Automation ensures consistent quality and accuracy while reducing, and sometimes eliminating, errors.

3. Wastage

Everyone's going lean, and waste is a major no-no for all businesses. Sometimes, you could be using too much packaging material or wasting product dues to spills and poor sealing. You could even be wasting time as labour struggles to maintain speed and cycle times, or extending shifts to cope with extra capacities. Automating your packaging operation can significantly increase packaging line efficiency while reducing costs.

4. Capacity

Planning to add more products to your basket? Want to cash in on increasing demand from growing markets? If you're planning on enhancing your production capacity, an automated machine should be your first choice. Faster speeds mean more packs per minute - so you save time and operating costs while you keep up with the increased manufacturing output.

5. Customer demand

Today's customers are demanding. They want their favourite foods packed in a variety of pack sizes and with modern conveniences like zipper bags or bags with easy-pour spouts. They want small packs that are easy to afford and carry. To tackle all these variations, automation makes good business sense. Packaging machines nowadays are versatile with easy cleaning & changeover, so you can offer your consumers a variety of products and pouch formats.

Consumers also want neat, attractive packaging. So the primary packaging is crucial but the wrapping & cartoning needs to be accurate and tidy too.

How automation helps

Automation uses technology to improve the speed, performance and optimization of equipment and systems at the unit, line, plant and enterprise levels. In recent years, there have been developments that have dramatically improved packaging line operations. These include:
  • Motion control including servo drives;
  • Sensors and machine vision systems;
  • Touchscreen human-machine interfaces;
  • Communications through wireless capability whereby one can monitor and control the packaging machine from anywhere, anytime.
Conclusion

Automating your packaging line can be confusing. It helps to talk to a packaging partner who will take the time to study and understand your needs and future plans. They might even identify opportunities for improvement in packaging line efficiency, cost reduction, and productivity that you may not recognize.

Nichrome India is one such partner. A leading provider of innovative packaging solutions, Nichrome offers custom packaging systems with packaging systems integration. Food packaging systems, pharma packaging systems, secondary packaging systems – Nichrome can design and develop the entire package to suit your operations. With over 4 decades of experience in the field, Nichrome is your trusted partner for packaging systems automation and integrated packaging solutions.

Why Horizontal Form Fill Seal Machines Are Gaining in Popularity

HORIZONTAL FORM FILL SEAL MACHINES

HORIZONTAL FORM FILL SEAL MACHINES
HORIZONTAL FORM FILL SEAL MACHINES - Nichrome Packaging Solutions

When it comes to modern packaging, FFS (Form Fill Seal) machines is now the accepted norm. With their sophisticated computer interfaces and control networks, FFS machines offer greater speed, savings and versatility - both in terms of applications and pouch formats. FFS machines employ a wide range of material types and are used across numerous markets including food, drinks, cosmetics, personal care, electronics, stationary, chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Horizontal Form Fill Seal machines are growing in popularity because of the volume and range of products that can be packaged using this type of machine. They also offer a wider variety of pouch formats and with different fillers, can package a diverse range of products.

In this sector, a range of machines are available: from simpler lower operational speeds, to higher throughput systems with a wider range of packaging sizes and features such as print registration. In addition, there are also specialist versions tailored to a specific product or need, such as hermetic sealing. As such, control solutions vary from simple stepper based, servo based with simple PLC controllers, motion controllers, PC based or often the vendors own dedicated controller. So based on their applications, space, output expectations and budget, buyers can find an HFFS machine that suits their operations.

Pouch filling & sealing, the HFFS way

In the bagging unit, the film is mounted on a reel unwinder. The heat sealable film flowing horizontally folds around a forming plough, and is then sealed on three sides by vertical sealing units before the pouch is cut vertically controlled by the photocell. The pouch opening device opens the pouch and brings it to the filling station.

The filler dispenses the product in the set quantity into the pouch, and then the top stretching mechanism stretches the pouch to make a clean top seal for the standard 4 side sealed Flat Pouch or Standup Pouches.

Advantages of HFFS Technology

  • Ideal for fragile products which cannot withstand a high drop
  • Built for high volume production environments; duplex modules double output
  • Delivers a variety of pouches (standup pouch, pouch with zipper or spout, etc.) for better product aesthetics and shelf presence
  • Bags made on HFFS are less expensive than pre-made bags
  • Total automation – savings on manpower costs
  • Consistent packing rate
  • Accurate filling; precise amount of product is dispensed into pouch without spillage
  • Fast - increased production rate, reduced number of shifts
  • Strong seal integrity
  • Easy and quick to clean-out between production batches
  • 'Online' film printing provides readable bar code and product info
Conclusion

Interested in getting an HFFS machine for your packaging line? We suggest you talk to a packaging solution provider who will work with you to understand your requirements, then select and integrate the best packaging equipment to optimize your company's operations. Nichrome works with you through the complete lifecycle to provide customized packaging solutions and technical support that truly enhance productivity with performance. INTEGRATED PRE & POST PACKAGING FOR SPICES

Various food manufacturing industries need customized solutions for raw product processing, packaging & secondary conveying system. Basic processing lines require product handling systems, product cleaning & grading system, grinding or pulverizing, blending, etc.

Pre & Post Packaging Machine
Pre & Post Packaging Machine
Spices play an important role in enhancing the flavor and taste of processed foods. On account of their ability to impart flavor and aroma, spices have been used in the preparation of a wide variety of processed foods. Spices are required in preparing appetizing beverages and confectionary, soup powders, sauces, instant curries, canned meat and poultry products, etc. Spices are also used in medicines because of their carminative, stimulating and digestive properties. Considering the potential market opportunity of such units, Nichrome has developed end to end packaging solutions for the spice industry.

PROCESS DETAILS:

The key products of Spice sector are Turmeric, chilly, coriander & Cumin. Normally the process flow for primary processing line is as below:

(i) Washing: First of all, the spices are washed with water under high pressure to remove impurities.

(ii) Peeling & cutting to small pieces: Some spices require peeling and cutting to small pieces. Such spices are peeled with hand knives. After peeling, cut spices are conveyed till dryer.

(iii) Drying: Spices are spread on the floor for sun drying. At times, mechanical dryers are also used. Tray type dryer is most suitable for such product.

(iv) Grinding/ Pulverizing: Spices are ground in dry form. The basic principle is straightforward. A hammer mill is essentially a steel drum containing a vertical or horizontal rotating shaft or drum on which hammers are mounted. The hammers are free to swing on the ends of the cross, or fixed to the central rotor. The rotor is spun at a high speed inside the drum while material is fed into a feed hopper. The material is impacted by the hammer bars and is thereby shredded and expelled through screens in the drum of a selected size.

(v) Screening / Grading – After grinding, the powder is transferred to vibro screener for grading of the ground product. Here, bigger size particles are separated from original product. After screening, the product is conveyed for mixing process.

(vi) Mixing: After all the above operations, various spices for different purposes are mixed together in a ribbon blender. For proper mixing, the blender runs in cyclic mode. A typical mix cycle usually takes no longer than 15 minutes and, with the ribbon agitator continuing to run, the discharge step is also completed quickly. It is a straightforward process which a basic Ribbon Blender can easily handle provided it is sized for the right bulk density. After blending, the powder is conveyed by screw conveyor till further equipment.

(vii) Packaging: At the end, spices powder is packaged in automatic form fill and sealing machine using a vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machine filler. Normally, powdery products are filled by servo driven auger filler to achieve accuracy & speed. Printed film roll is mounted at the back of the VFFS machine. After that, pouch formation, product filling & sealing are completed through PLC based programs.

Normally heat sealable laminated film is used for packing. Date batch coding facility is also provided on machine with various types of printer range.

Integrated Packaging Solutions

(viii) Territory Packaging: For distribution purpose, retail packs are again packed in cartons or gunny bags.

Normally, manually or in automatic mode, bundle / liner from LDPE or low thickness pouch as per the customer’s SKU range, are made. This pouch or liner is sealed with the help of band sealer or in an automatic machine. After that, the bundle / liner is repacked in territory gunny bag for further distribution.

Cartoning line – another method of secondary packing line is cartoning line. In this method, primary pouches are manually kept in cartons as per customized matrix. After that, the carton is conveyed through power roller conveyor till cart tapping staring machine. This machine folds carton flaps & sticks adhesive tape automatically on closed flaps. Before taping, the carton checkweigher is also used to cross-check carton weight or missed out pouch quantity. After taping, the carton is conveyed for carton stripping.

This unit seals the carton with metal strips. In the last stage, carton wrapping is also done for final dispatch.

Edible Oil Packaging

Edible oil packaging in India has evolved and come a long way. Manufacturers are doing away with tins and glass bottles. Semi-rigid containers or flexible pouches are gaining more popularity as they provide long shelf life; are light weight, economical, offer more hygiene, safety and can be easily transported.  However, a lot of cooking oil and fats still continue to be traded in loose or in unpacked form. This leaves lot of scope for companies to come up with economical and safer cooking oil filling & packaging solutions.

Refined oils are being replaced by healthier options like olive oil, canola oil and refined rice bran oil. Olive oil which was earlier used for personal care purpose has gained a foothold in the premium segment Indian edible oil market. Also there has been a rise in demand for newer categories of oil segments like palm oil, soya bean oil, gingerly and mustard oil. Manufacturers have therefore started concentrating on the new trend and demand while choosing contemporary cooking oil packaging machines

Indian edible oil companies are also entering the fortified oil segment where these oils have vital vitamin content viz. A, D & E, to help fight malnutrition. Rising demand for low fat & cholesterol oil which addresses the health aspect and enables users to stay light and active is another major trend witnessed in this industry. There has also been a steady rise in demand for branded edible oil market with sunflower and soya oils leading the market. Oil manufacturers have been benefitted with customized oil filling and packaging machines that help pack in various pouch formats.

Also buying edible oil in bulk versus smaller quantities is another major trend where sectors like hospitality do bulk purchase like purchasing 15litre tins, whereas a general household purchase oil units like 1 litre and 2 litre oil pouches and ghee pouches or 5litre cans. Oil packaging machine manufacturers have been closely following these new market trends.
Oil is a commodity. In a competitively growing scenario, it is the design and communication which will help the brand to gain visibility and stand out on the retail shelf. A good design which addresses the convenience aspect will help companies to gain customer brand loyalty and thereby greater ROI for brands owners. To attain this, a design has to stand to its brand promise and should stay strong in the market for at least five to six years.

Nichrome is one of the leading automatic packaging machine manufacturers that offer superior quality automatic edible oil filling machines, oil pouch packing machines, ghee pouch packing machines, and various other automatic packaging machines like spice packaging machine, snacks packaging machine, salt packaging machine, sugar packaging machine and so on.

Our high-speed and automatic oil filling & packaging machines maintain accuracy in performance and ensure minimal wastage of products. Benefits of Packed Sugar!

Sugar acts as a tenderizing and texturing agent in frozen foods and baked foods. For e.g. it increases the effectiveness of yeast providing an immediate and more utilized source of nourishment for its growth. Adding sugar to ice-cream provides body and texture which is perceived as smoothness. It is therefore important to retain the goodness of sugar while packing it to be sent to the retail market.

Loose sugar in gunny bags or jute bags is exposed to atmospheric air and temperature thus reducing its inherent goodness. This sugar when added to food or beverages is likely to ruin its taste and nutrition value. Manufacturers have therefore switched to packed sugar as it is easily preferred by reasonably aware consumers residing in cities and semi-urban areas. Packed sugar is in vogue as it is easy to pick and carry. Sugar Packaging requires accurate filling and packaging solutions that keep the goodness of sugar intact and improve its shelf life. Versatile pouch packaging also defines the solution and its scalability. . Various pouch formats, like Four Side Seal, Re-Sealable Pouches, Pillow Pouch, Pouches with Zippers, etc., are available for sugar packaging that enhance its aesthetics lending a unique identity for the brand.

Automatic sugar filling and packaging machines are the multitasking solutions that can also seal the packs the moment they are filled.
